Give us courage was the cry of the disciples!

In the heady days of Acts, their was much opposition to the followers of Jesus and the message that they brought. And so they prayed. They didn’t pray for protection or for the threats to come to nothing. Instead they prayed for courage; for boldness. And that’s what God gave them.

“And now, Lord, pay attention to their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your message with great courage…” Acts 4:29

“When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God courageously.” Acts 4:31

The power and presence of the Holy Spirit is a wonderful thing. The Holy Spirit is the gift that Jesus said that he would send to all who believed. It is a gift that is there for us to embrace and receive with open arms, an open mind and an open heart.

The Holy Spirit has been given to us for many reasons; to teach us, to comfort us, to guide us, to sanctify us so that we obey the commands of Jesus, and to shape us so that we display the fruits of the Spirit.

But that isn’t all. The work of the Holy Spirit isn’t just to be within us, but to touch the world. And so the Holy Spirit was given to us to give us the words we need when we are accused and put on trial, to be His witnesses across the face of the earth and to supernaturally empower us to do His work.

As we follow Jesus wherever He may lead, we will face many obstacles. There will be times of disappointment and times of danger. Times of ridicule and of rejection. Times when we need patience and perseverance.

And so the Holy Spirit is there to also bring courage and boldness, patience and perseverance so that no matter what circumstances we face, what opposition we come against, we will have the inner strength.

We cannot do as Jesus calls unless we have the power of the Holy Spiirt working in us and through us. The believers in Acts 4 prayed in a way that caused God to move, and they were filled afresh with the Holy Spirit, being saturated with His holy and powerful presence.

Lord fill us afresh today that we may have supernatural courage and boldness to be your witnesses, even in the face of opposition. Come Holy Spirit, saturate us with your presence!
