Plant a church? Why would you ever want to do that?

By March 17, 2017Acts 2 DNA, Leadership

Plant a church? Why would you ever want top do that? That was the thought that ran through my mind as we spoke to Norman. He was an older man who devoted his life to the cause of Christ in this world, and at our first meeting he raised it as an option for us to consider. He was an older man who devoted his life to the cause of Christ in this world, and at our first meeting he raised it as an option for us to consider.

He obviously didn’t understand. There were so many reasons why it was a bad suggestion.

I was a relatively new Christian, not growing up in a church going home.

I didn’t feel we were qualified as neither my wife Sharon nor myself had ever been to bible college.

I was a Chartered Accountant and businessman intent in making a fortune, and I was frantically busy.

Sharon had just had two babies 18 months apart and had her hands full being determined to be a good mum and wife.

So many reasoChurch Planting Takes Root In Tasmania.001 (1)ns why church planting was a crazy idea! And yet Norman, this wise older man obviously saw something in us that we didn’t see in ourselves. He also saw possibilities that our eyes just weren’t yet opened to.

And so 24 years after first talking to Norman, we are still leading the church that we planted all those years ago. In all honesty, I can’t think of what we could have done that would have been more fulfilling. Yes, there have been times of hard, but we have hung in there and grown through these times.

The late Peter Wagner is well known for making the comment that “Church planting is the most effective form of evangelism under heaven”.

Do you think that perhaps God may be calling you to plant a church?

IMG_6080We are about to run a workshop to help you discover whether you are wired to plant a church and to equip you to be able to plant a church.

The workshop will help you to discover what the attributes of successful church planters are and how good a fit you are for church planting. We explore disciple making principles that are keys to seeing new churches being born, and we will be exploring and training in tools that will help you to reach people who don’t yet know Jesus.

In addition we will be looking at different strategies for establishing churches and helping you develop your own masterplan for establishing a church. What we won’t be doing is giving you a cookie cutter approach by telling you step by step what you must do and how you must do it. Rather we will be helping to equip and assist you in discerning what God is asking you to do, and to plan this out.

The reason we take this approach is that our country needs all different kinds of churches in large cities, in small rural towns and in different regions, and one size doesn’t fit all.

Add to this is the fact that each planter is uniquely wired and gifted. So we want to work with you to help you to do what God is calling you to do.

IMG_3585I’ll be leading the workshop at Tailrace Community in Launceston Tasmania, commencing 12 pm on Tuesday 23 January 2018. It will run until 1pm Thursday 25 January 2018. The cost for the workshop will be $250 per person. This covers not only the workshops and workbooks, but all meals for the duration of the workshop. We recommend accomodation across the road from our venue at Tamar River Villas.
